I love epic rides. Rand and I set out on a beautiful 75-mile ride in Northern California on Saturday. Going from Grover Beach to San Luis Obispo then on to Morro Bay and back through Pismo Beach, we saw much of what makes this part of California so amazing.

Plenty of great spots to enjoy today's Tour of California Stage 5 Time Trial in Solvang, California. This was one of them, right before the start of the climb.

2007 Tour of California is next month with an expanded course and some of the best Pro Tour teams out there. Should be a great week of cycling. Official Tour of California site. Pez Cycling's preview of the event.

At this very moment in this little life of mine I wish I was doing this: Cycling down 84-E into Woodside, California. (Thank you to whomever filmed this video.) This is one of my favorite decents in the Bay Area - fast, somewhat technical and always a car or two to race on the way down. I usually hit this ride up almost every weekend with the peeps, but missed out last weekend...This next weekend can't come soon enough. Enjoy the ride.

The Tour de France is in turmoil and it has yet to begin. Ivan Basso (Team CSC) and Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile) -- two of the most favored men to win this year -- were both pulled from the Tour de France today by their respective teams as a doping scandal investigation widens. See articles at Velo News and NY Times.
Who could have predicted an opening weekend to the Tour de France like this? Wow. This sucks on so many levels.

Heads up for Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team fans (and cycling fans in general or people who like guys who shave their legs) Discovery Channel has created a free, very well-produced behind the scenes video podcast on iTunes called Race 2 Replace currently there are 10 "webisodes" equaling about an hour and a half of content (with more on the way). The same clips are also available on the Race 2 Replace website.

Cycling is traditionally divided into stars and water-carriers and while battle rages at the top of the Giro d'Italia rankings between stars such as Ivan Basso, José Gutierrez and Paolo Savoldelli, a literal contest among water-carriers has been going on further back.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport Quick-Step's José Antonio Garrido recently set a new record by carrying 16 water bottles simultaneously from the team car to his team-mates. With one bottle in his mouth, two in the cages on the bike, two in his pockets, six under the front of his jersey, and five under the back, Garrido lugged over five litres of water to his team-mates.
In yesterday's stage, Fabio Sacchi (Milram) beat Garrido's record by carrying 18 water bottles simultaneously, but Garrido thinks he can beat the Italian. "I've already done a test, and think I can manage 20 bottles," he said.
There's more than just bragging rights at stake too. At the end of the Giro on Sunday, Italian cycling legend Francesco Moser will present a prize to the man who manages to carry the most bottles: a bottle of wine for each of the bottles carried. "It will be a kind of miracle: water will be turned into wine!" said Moser.

This relentless pursuit of excellence will continue to remain our focus. We figured that each time we go to the windtunnel it cost us about $25,000. It might make more sense to spend that same amount of money on ads and marketing, but that won’t get you a better bike. We apologize in advance if our ads look like they were written by engineers. We figured you would rather read an ad designed by an engineer than ride a bike designed by the marketing department.

The proof is in the pudding. Team CSC rider Ivan Basso is riding away with the Giro d'Italia (W) right now on a Cervélo.*
* Great bikes indeed -- but it also helps when you're Italian and promise your mother just before she died of cancer that you will one day win the premier road cycling race of their homeland -- with motivation like that, Basso could probably win the race on a beach cruiser...Cervélo beach cruiser of course.

Just two days left to help my friend Rand meet his goal of raising $7000 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. He's up over $6000 now. If you have a few extra dollars and are up for supporting the battle against cancer please donate. Thanks!

Jeff Werner and Shawn Litster are making an epic cycling trip from Vancouver, Canada to Mexico via the beautiful west coast. The total mileage and timeframe is about the same as the Tour de France -- approx 3000 kilometers over a few weeks.
I wasn't about to pass up the opportunity to meet these guys as they made their way through Santa Cruz -- which is just a 35 minute jump from Cupertino. Jeff and I know each other from the blog world. One of those classic examples of an email here and a link there leads to meeting up at an opportune time. We had a great lunch and I put in a few miles with them to the campground. Even with an extra 30 lbs. on their bikes they were still up for a few sprints!
Great guys, great trip and a great sense of adventure. They are heading your way Greg! See a few shots at Flickr.

And he shall seek seven. Whether Lance Armstrong wins or loses his seventh, it will surely make for a great battle. Can't wait to see what young guns step up to the plate this July.
So here is my Tour de France life in a nutshell -- I usually end up watching each stage of the tour twice -- morning and evening and then spend the day reading about it. In addition to that, I annoy Rebecca about how amazing it is -- to the point that she starts to like it. All the while getting little to know work done. I'm basically a worthless, cycling consuming human being that month. Oh well. Maybe this I should go to France??? Via Jeff.

Luckily technology compensates for decisions like this. Amazing how far freeride mountain biking has come. I need to dust off my mountain bike off...
